Nothing beats the sweet sound of a basketball swishing through a basket. Nothing beats the feeling of making that final shot that notches the eleventh point in a hard fought pickup game. That's why so many people play basketball. Every time I walk into the Sports Authority, the first ball on the rack is this Spalding NBA-official Basketball retailing at a ridiculous eight-something dollars when others retail somewhere in the thirties. I wondered why someone would spend so much money on a basketball until my friend got one as a birthday present.
We played about two or three hours a day for an entire summer last year and we fell in love with the ball. I had always been used to using balls with a "stickier" shell because it gave me greater control since my hands aren't NBA size. I can grip some Wilson balls because of that stickiness which gives you greater control of the ball but I can't grip the Spalding ball. However, you would guess that would make me not like the ball right? Wrong! Somehow the weight of the Spalding ball just seems right and my shots are going in more often because of it. The weight may play a role in that but I believe it is more because I don't put as much rotation on the ball when I shoot now, because of less "stickiness."
The durability of the ball isn't a problem, that thing is as new as the day he bought it, albeit a bit broken in. We played it outside on his driveway a few times and it hardly even shows it. As for air retention, I think we've pumped it up twice that summer and he generally kept it in his room where it was a moderate temperature.
The only thing about the ball is that it's so expensive that it's out of the price range of most college students, like me. $80 is a lot of food/beer to be spending on a basketball that a student id can get you for free for a couple of hours.
BUT, if I had the disposable income, I'd definitely get this ball and nowadays Amazon.com (The biggest online shopping center) has a lot of cheap Spalding Basketballs that you can get one easily.
